Saint Lover

This song is a prayer, a poem, a reminder of how damn lucky I am to have Tony Czech as my partner in this life. He’s in the middle of the Bering Sea making a surf film right now & wont see this for another week so I’m gonna gloat…

He is every word of this song & more. It was written in the beginning of the hardest season of our lives & marriage. April of 2020, building our house DIY & living in a 700 sq/ft condo with an infant & 4-year-old. We’ve been broke & jobless, frustrated creatives, we’ve been sick & down on our luck, we’ve known worse more than we’ve known better & there isn’t anyone else I’d want by my side to battle it all out with.

I had found respite reading every book by Barbara Brown Taylor & texting with my friend Leslie Jordan about our mutual love for this woman & her wisdom. Leslie sent a message back that BBT was “the Patron Saint of saving my faith” & that was it. This song literally fell out of the sky. I sent her a sketch of melody & lyrics & we sent voice notes back & forth until it was written. A whole song out of a single text in a couple minutes while driving down the interstate. A prayer.

A cord of three strands is not easily broken. My Uncle John prayed those words over Tony & I when he married us. We get to celebrate our 14th wedding anniversary next week when he’s back & I can honestly say we’re in one of the sweetest chapters of our lives after 17 years together. I would’ve given up a hundred times on all of it if it wasn’t for you Tony. You are my Saint Lover forever.

Lyrics

He’s the patron saint of saving my faith

Ain’t a bone in his body knows how to hate

The forgiver of my wilder days

The keeper of my stubborn ways

The better half of the best of me

My desert island company

Morning coffee, last whiskey

Never should’ve got so lucky

Saint lover

Saint friend

No other

Till the end

Praying father

I’ll be damned

If I ever lose him

Amen

He's heard the worst words from my lips

Always makes it right with just a kiss

I'm wrong a lot but I know this

He's quick to forgive all my sins

Saint lover

Saint friend

No other

Till the end

Praying father

I’ll be damned

If I ever lose him

Amen

He don't get it right all the time

But when he holds me tight

It's as close as I have been

To heaven

Saint lover

Saint friend

No other

Till the end

Praying father

I’ll be damned

If I lose him

Amen
